Kelowna Professional Stump Grinding & Removal Services
Stumps and roots are generally removed in one of two methods; stump grinding or excavation. Stump grinding will grind a stump down up to 4-6” below ground level, but does not completely remove all of the roots and small micro fibrous root tips that extend far beyond the base of the tree. The stump will no longer be visible, and enough depth can be allowed to apply topsoil and sod, or other small plants and shrubs. Stump grinding is usually cheaper than excavation, and rarely conflicts with underground infrastructure like irrigation, water, sewer or gas lines.
Which Option Is Right For You?
Kelowna Stump Removal
Excavation can completely remove the stump and roots, but often disrupts the lawn or other plants and shrubs when they are extracted. The process may also leave a large hole, which could require additional soil to be hauled in to fill the area.
The benefit of this method is that it provides a clean canvas for a new design. Replacement trees, building structures, footings used for concrete or other hardscapes, will be free from obstruction after the stump and roots are completely removed. Keep in mind, however, the larger the tree, the larger the stump.
Mature trees that are larger in diameter can require large equipment to be extracted, which may not be feasible. Excessively large stumps may not be removable at all.
Kelowna Stump Grinding
Stump grinding removes the visible portion of the stump by grinding it down below the surface, rather than pulling it out entirely. This process is much less disruptive to the surrounding area and is typically the preferred option when you want to preserve your lawn, landscaping, or nearby structures.
Because the roots remain in the ground, there is no large hole left behind. The remaining area is filled with grindings, which can either be left to settle naturally or removed and replaced with soil depending on your plans for the space.
The benefit of stump grinding is that it is efficient, cost-effective, and suitable for most properties. It allows you to reclaim the area for grass or general use without the need for heavy excavation or major cleanup. However, since the root system is not fully removed, it may not be the best option if you are planning construction, installing footings, or replanting in the exact same location.
Stump grinding is also more practical for larger stumps or areas with limited access, where full removal would require significant equipment or cause unnecessary disruption.

Understanding the Cost of Stump Removal & Grinding
The cost of stump removal and stump grinding depends on factors such as stump size, root depth, location, and accessibility. Larger or deeply rooted stumps require more time and specialized equipment, which can affect pricing.
Stump grinding is typically the most affordable and efficient option, as it removes the visible stump below ground level with minimal disruption to your yard. Complete stump excavation may cost more due to deeper root removal and additional labor.
We provide transparent pricing and free estimates to ensure you receive the best solution for your property and budget.
What Our Customers Say
Frequently Asked Questions
Stump grinding typically goes 6–12 inches below ground level, which is deep enough to remove the visible stump and allow for grass or surface landscaping.
If you have specific plans—such as replanting or installing something in that exact location—the stump can be ground deeper if needed. However, deeper grinding may require additional time and may not fully remove all structural roots.
For most homeowners, standard grinding depth is sufficient to reclaim the area and eliminate the visible stump.
